George Ormond was born in 1896. Before joining the Army, he was a van shifter working on the railway.

George’s father was William Ormond (born 1850 in Tolpuddle, Dorset. His mother was Harriet Norris (born 1858 at Fordington, Dorset). William and Harriet married in lambeth in 1877. William worked on the railway as a porter.

William’s grandfather was James Orman (born 1822 born the Hampreston or possibly the Horton area of Dorset) and his grandmother was Mary Wey (born 1830, Dorset). She is listed as Orman on the Births, Marriages and Deaths index but was buried as Mary Wey Ormond on 19 June 1851. As spelling was sometimes a hit-or-miss affair, these changes of spelling were not unusual.

Members of the Ormand family have traced their tree back to 1556, mainly from to parish records and visiting the area.

Information from the censuses

In 1911 the Gude family lived at 26 Willington Road, Stockwell, where they occupied 4 rooms.Thomas George Gude, 39, was an engine driver for the London and South West Railway. He was born in Battersea. Alice Milly Gude, 47, was born in Clapham. Alfred Bernard Gude, their only child, was a messenger lad for the London and South West Railway.

Ten years previously, in 1901, the Gude family lived at 17 Union Street, Clapham. Two locomotive engine firemen, Walter H. Dizzard, a 26-year-old single man born in Guildford, Surrey, and William E. Burnard, 20, single and from Southsea, Hampshire, lodged with the family.

Frederick John Doel

Information from the censuses

In 1901 Frederick J. Doel, 4,  was living at  5 Spring Gardens with his mother, Ada Jane Doel (née Scrine), 23, a washer and ironer born in Lambeth, and his younger brother, Walter H. Doel, 2. The boys were born in Lambeth. There is no mention of their father.

In 1911 the family was living in 3 rooms at 29 Fountain Street (now gone), Lambeth. Frederick is listed as Fredrick. There were 3 sons: Frederick, 14, Walter, 12, and Arthur, 9, the latter born in Brixton. Again, Ada describes herself as married and a “wife” rather than “head” but there is no husband on the census.
