Samuel Charles Howden

Son of Samuel Charles and Emily Howden, of 44, Grenville Place, Brighton.
Remembered at Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, France

Information from the censuses

In 1911, 12-year-old Samuel Charles Howden, whose father was also called Samuel Charles, lived at 155 Pullens Buildings, Amelia Street, off Walworth Road. Samuel Charles senior, 36, born in south Hackney, was a motor cab driver. His mother, Emily, 32, was from Walworth. There were 4 children, all born in West Newington, apart from Mabel, who was born in Walworth:

Henry Hubert Howden, 9
Mabel Emily Howden, 6
Wilfred William, 4 months
Samuel and Emily had had 5 children, 4 of them surviving in 1911.
In 1901 the Howden family lived at 160 Manor Place, Newington. Alice R. Hughes, 17, Emily’s sister, lived with them and worked as a clothes sorter.

Bertie Hoft

Born in Lambeth; enlisted in Battersea
Died of wounds at around age 19 on 7 May 1916
Remembered at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord), France

Information from the 1911 census

Bertie Hoft and his brother Hermann Hoft (who served in the war and survived) were sons of Hermann Hoft. Hermann Senior, 47, worked as a syrup maker for a mineral water factor. He was born in Germany. His wife, Christiana Hoft, 48, was born in St George’s, London. They had 6 children:

Hermann L. Hoft, 19, a van guard in the mineral water factory
James F. Hoft, 17, a builder’s labourer
George C. Hoft, 15, a machine cleaner in a tobacco factory
Bertie C. Hoft, 13, at school and working as a newsboy
Lilian M. Hoft, 10
All were born in Lambeth.
Two boarders lived with the family: Elizjah Gathercole, 22, a single baker from Brandon, Norfolk, and William E. Wright, 32, a married butcher from Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1901 the family lived at 65 Bond Street, Lambeth.

Alfred James Harris

In 1911 Alfred James as a 12-year-old schoolboy living with his family at 14 Larkhall Lane, where they occupied 7 rooms. Frederick James Harris, 51, a brewery stoker and Eliza Mary Harris, 56, did not give birthplaces. They had 8 children, 5 of whom were included on the census return:
William John Harris, 30, a railway stoker, born in Twickenham
Albert Frank Harris, 26, a packer, born in Twickenham
Edith Alice Harris, 17, a dressmaker’s assistant, born in South Lambeth
Minnie Eliza Harris, 16, a packer, born in South Lambeth
Alfred James Harris, 12, born in South Lambeth

Charles Morley Harradine

Information from the 1911 census

In 1911 Charles Harradine was 11 and living with his family at 12 Gaskell Street, Clapham (off Larkhall Rise). Sidney Harradine, 36, was an undertaker’s coachman.He was born in Hensworth, Hertfordshire. Mary Harradine, 46, was born in Tottenham. They had had 5 children but in 1911 only 2 survived: Florence Harradine, 13, born in Tottenham, and Charles, 11, born in Wood Green.

Alfred Bernard Gude

Died aged about 19 on 16 June 1915
Remembered at Wandsworth (Streatham) Cemetery, London SW16

Information from the censuses

In 1911 the Gude family lived at 26 Willington Road, Stockwell, where they occupied 4 rooms.Thomas George Gude, 39, was an engine driver for the London and South West Railway. He was born in Battersea. Alice Milly Gude, 47, was born in Clapham. Alfred Bernard Gude, their only child, was a messenger lad for the London and South West Railway.

Ten years previously, in 1901, the Gude family lived at 17 Union Street, Clapham. Two locomotive engine firemen, Walter H. Dizzard, a 26-year-old single man born in Guildford, Surrey, and William E. Burnard, 20, single and from Southsea, Hampshire, lodged with the family.

Information from the censuses

In 1911 the Griffiths family was living at 8 Aldebert Terrace, South Lambeth. William Griffiths, 53, was a blacksmith working for the railway, from Mornston in Glamorganshire. Carrie Griffiths, 46, was from Oldswinford, Worcestershire. They had 6 children, all surviving in 1911.

All the children were born in Lambeth.
Theodore Arthur Hill, a single 32-year-old theatrical actor from Blackheath, south-east London, boarded with the family. In Ten years previously, in 1901 the Griffiths family was found at 183 South Lambeth Road living with 4 boarders.
