Joseph Wellman Hussey

Born at Chard, Somerset; enlisted in Sevenoaks, Kent; lived in West Ewell, Surrey
Died at about age 37 on 24 May 1915
CWGC: “Cross of St. George (Russian). Son of Ann Hussey, of Winsham, nr. Chard, Somerset. Served in South African Campaign.”
Remembered at Hop Store Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium; also at Waterloo Station and Canterbury Cathedral

Information from the 1911 census

In 1911 Joseph Wellman Hussey, 33, was living alone in one room at 78 Wilcox Road, South Lambeth. He was working as a railway porter. He stated that he was born in Thorncombe, Dorset. In 1912 he married 22-year-old Elsie Ann Cameron, who lived at 88 Wilcox Road.

Hussey is mentioned in John Buchan’s book Francis and Riversdale Grenfell: A Memoir (Francis Grenfell was his commanding officer).

Harry George Walter Hurt

Born in St Pancras; enlisted in Westminster; lived in South Lambeth
CWGC: “Son of Frederick George and Martha Hurt, of II Guildford Road, South Lambeth Road, London.”
Died aged 24 on 25 October 1916
Remembered at Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

Information from the 1911 census

In 1911 the Hurt family lived at 22 Langley Lane, Kennington. Frederick G. Hurt, 58, was a whitesmith (he worked with the “white” or light-coloured metals such as tin and pewter), born in St Pancras. Martha Hurt, 56, was from Poplar, east London. They had had 7 children, with 6 surviving, including:
Alice M. Hurt, 23, a typist
Frederick J. Hurt, 21, a postman
Harry G. Hurt, 18, a clerk
Martha L. Browne, 38, a widow
Martha’s children Charles Browne, 10, and Elsie Browne, 5, lived with the family. All were born in St Pancras.

Henry Charles Hunt

CWGC: “Son of Henry and Matilda Hunt, of Conway Street, Wandsworth Road, Lambeth; husband of Elizabeth Caroline Hunt, of 122 Bennerley Road, Northcote Road, Battersea, London.”
Remembered at Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France

Information from the 1911 census

Henry Charles Hunt, 20 in 1911, was the eldest child of Henry Hunt, 42, a painter’s labourer, and Matilda Hunt. 40. The couple had had 9 children, 7 surviving at the time of the census. The entire family was born in Lambeth.

Frederick Hunt, 4
Emma Maxter, a 50-year-old single ironer born in Lambeth, boarded with the family.
The Hunts lived in 4 rooms at 148 Wandsworth Road.

Samuel Charles Howden

Son of Samuel Charles and Emily Howden, of 44, Grenville Place, Brighton.
Remembered at Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, France

Information from the censuses

In 1911, 12-year-old Samuel Charles Howden, whose father was also called Samuel Charles, lived at 155 Pullens Buildings, Amelia Street, off Walworth Road. Samuel Charles senior, 36, born in south Hackney, was a motor cab driver. His mother, Emily, 32, was from Walworth. There were 4 children, all born in West Newington, apart from Mabel, who was born in Walworth:

Henry Hubert Howden, 9
Mabel Emily Howden, 6
Wilfred William, 4 months
Samuel and Emily had had 5 children, 4 of them surviving in 1911.
In 1901 the Howden family lived at 160 Manor Place, Newington. Alice R. Hughes, 17, Emily’s sister, lived with them and worked as a clothes sorter.

Joseph Edward Hobbs

CWGC: “Son of Joseph Edward and Edith Hobbs, of 62, Hargwyne Street, Stockwell, London.”
Remembered at Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece

Information from the censuses

In 1911 Joseph Edward Hobbs, 39, a fitter’s mate for an electrical light company, and his wife Edith Hobbs, 35, lived in 3 rooms at 62 Hargwyne Street, with their three sons: Fred Hobbs, 16, a messenger boy; Edward Hobbs (the J. E. Hobbs listed on the Stockwell memorial), 13; and Henry Hobbs, 11. The parents, Joseph and Edith, were both born in Paddington, Fred in St Pancras and the younger two brothers in North Kensington.
